I'm a big fan of progressive rock, and Japan certainly doesn't disappoint. Though I've only just started getting into the Japanese progressive rock scene, these are my favorites thus far.

>MidasBorn out of the desire to create a kind of progressive rock unique to Japan; keyboards and violin are the main instruments. They started out only singing in Japanese, but in their later albums they started using English more.

>Terutsugu HirayamaPart of the relatively famous Novela and founder of Tera Symphonia, he released a solo project that was in the vein of 80s symphonic/neo prog movement. Very pompous and grand.

On my continuing journey through Japan's progressive rock scene, I've found another notable band: that is Mizukagami. They unfortunately released only two albums, but both are solid symphonic works in the vein of King Crimson. The cool thing about this group is that they mix traditional Japanese musical motifs into the European symphonic progressive rock style. This is very evident in TanaamiFutaba's singing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WoP4opDXA0While not very rock, Hiromi Uehara is very skilled pianist who composes original Jazz fusion songs. She's played with legends such as Chick Corea.
Her playing is as infectious as her smile. Try not to be too giddy when you see her light up the keys. (The musicians she employs are also no slouches either, and they are also famous in the jazz world.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXsuPkyFQuQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFeouD2IWSA>>21937>AsturiasI'm glad you liked them. Their instrument choice is eclectic on their acoustic output and works perfectly for the music they make. Your soft comparison to Mike Oldfield is a good one.
>homepagehttp://www.geocities.jp/gonzo1go/home.htmlThey have a portal for both English and Japanese. Also note that they release their albums under different names according that album's style. They've used three names so far: Asturias, Electric Asturias, and Acoustic Asturias.
>Spock's Beard is pretty great too, I hadn't heard of them before. They are one of the premier modern progressive rock bands, and they were part of the 90s revival. If you like them enough, check out Neal Morse's work. He was their initial frontman. (Be advised he does Christian progressive rock, but the music itself is good enough to overcome the lyrics.)
Also Ryo Okumoto has a solo album.

I discovered another modern Japanese prog rock band, and holy shit are they good; their name is Yuka & Chronoship. The outfit is lead by the talented keyboardist, Funakoshi Yuka. The other members are quite good as well. The music is mostly instrumental and is like a sampler of the entire history of progressive rock; it's quite eclectic.
I recommend listening to their 2015 release, "The 3rd Planetary Chronicles". (The album artwork is very cool and almost retro.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0UTtYZijY0If you're in the mood for some ELP-esque action, you try listening to Mahoujin's only album that was released in the 70s, "Babylonia Suite".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiuzyizY61oAnother Nippon prog rock band that I stumbled upon is Vermilion Sands. They're basically Japanese Renaissance, and I mean this in a very positive way. The band only did two albums; their debut album was released in the 80s. Their great singer, Royama Yoko, died from cancer in 2004 or so. She released one solo album entitled "Seeds of the Dream" in 2000.

Gentlemen, I beseech you to listen to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a9z-iHKtbUIt's eight and a half minutes of excerpts from The Samurai of Prog's latest studio endeavor, "Toki no Kaze".
They're an international outfit, and they have used Japanese musicians in the past, but this newest album takes this further with the inclusion of songs sung in Japanese. In addition, the album is inspired by Miyazaki's shit.
The music itself can be described as beautiful, grand, and symphonic; the instruments used very much reflect this with the traditional rock ensemble of guitar, electric bass, drums, and keyboards paired with strings, reed, wind, and other classical orchestral instruments.
I wouldn't call this "Japanese music," but I would be remiss if I were to not share this ostensible magnum opus with you all.

Been a while, but Cinderella Search's first album (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdfGeWItT_g) is pleasant, synth-laden prog rock with beautiful violin work. If it weren't for the singer's enunciation issues, I wouldn't think this were a Japanese band. There's even a bluegrass-country interlude in the second track–odd but enjoyable. Worst thing I can say is that they're best when they don't rock too much, and unfortunately, the longest track, "Voice From The Universe/Dulce Warning", does just that (but it's still decent track), and that maybe the lyrics should have been sung in Japanese.
Regardless, absolutely worth a listen if you enjoy pastoral neo-progressive rock and/or violin in your rock music.
