It's difficult to get excited for Akebi-chan since the manga's art is what really makes it special.
No.32687
>>32686I was going to pass on it anyway (because I tend to avoid adaptations of manga that I follow), but you are right that it isn't an easy one to adapt.
Sometimes, the manga shuts out the world to focus on Akebi's movements. Sometimes it basically turns into a sketchbook, with various drawings of her, in different sizes and focusing on different details, on a white background. This will fail spectacularly if you animate it straightforward, but a skilled cinematographer, a good animation director and a big budget could pull it off.
What's the staff like in this one?
- the director is mostly an animator and animation director, so I count that as a good omen
- the series compositor is debuting in that role, and has modest experience assisting production - not impressive
- the art directors are experienced, although there is little in their resumes that stands out for its good art
- the animation directors look good overall
By the way, I only now noticed our new board subtitle - how long has it been there?

>>32695I found Hakozume quite passable as one of those healing comedies about broken adults stuck in shitty jobs. I particularly liked how they handled the bit where the senpai accidentally reenacted a recruitment poster. I'll give it a couple more episodes.
The speech you allude to didn't bother me, as it was what I'd expect a police officer to say in that situation, although arguably it was out of character precisely because of that.
No.32699
>>32697>I particularly liked how they handled the bit where the senpai accidentally reenacted a recruitment poster. That was funny indeed. However there were just like 2-3 more good moments, kinda lackluster for a comedy. Though at least the part with "they are good people, provided they have slept and their time off was not denied" was top notch.
>although arguably it was out of character precisely because of that.Exactly; I expected some inner monologue or post-factum commentary so that I get a few more laughs out of the episode. Like this I was left feeling more like I watched a police recruitment video rather than a comedy about people stuck in shitty jobs. The whole "ooh, I swore on the tears of my daughter to never get a traffic ticket ever again" didn't help either.
But hey, maybe the second episode would be less propaganda and more comedy.
No.32700
>>32699It is often the case, when an episodic comedy manga is adapted, that the staff feel the need to give the audience a feeling of closure, and do so by shoehorning an overarching plot or a moral into it. I have no idea how preachy the source material is in this case, but I wouldn't be surprised if these themes were largely confined to the first and last episodes. I'll keep you posted.
This all brings to mind Uramichi Onii-san, which aside from being a very decent shitty job comedy, skillfully avoided ruining its last episode as the industry's tradition mandates.

>>32707>>32712Agreeing on Kaijuu Kaihatsubu. I'm always skeptic about meta humor, but it looks like they've hit upon a good mix. Rather than a comedy about sentai shows and their tropes, it feels more like a workplace comedy with the sentai theme thrown in for contrast.
Also, this superb piece of acting blew me away.

>>32723He just constantly overestimates everybody else. That is a familiar feeling. I eventually learned that no matter what your internal evaluation of your work is, most probably everybody else did worse than you. An actual genius prince would have figured that out too, and would be able to put percentages to the probability of failure of every plan and backup plan and backup of the backup, but ours is just a teen with above average smarts.
That means that the character development might actually be towards him becoming even more annoying. That would be fun to see.

>>32695>>32700Three episodes in, let's settle the Hakozume question.
Yeah, it's preachy. If you're in it for the comedy, stay clear of it and go watch Kaijin Kaihatsubu instead. As a SoL about police work it almost works, but the moralistic bits still detract from it. One thing it does well is portraying the muddier and uglier bits of daily human behavior, but, if you're into that kind of story, it's unlikely that you'll appreciate a happy conclusion being shoehorned in every time.
I think what it tries to be is a story about how the MC got back her faith in humanity and her job, and as such I only have one complaint to make: if this is the kind of society she lives in, and if she has this much power to make a positive difference in people's lives, it's hard to believe that she burned out in the first place.

>>32777>Planet WithIt's relatively easy to avoid the errors there: give the story at least 25 episodes, preferably more. So yeah, episode count + whether Mizukami managed to get The Pillows should determine success here.

No.32819
>>32818The whole thing in episode 4 was a retarded misunderstanding but they treated it like some Eva episode or something. Unlike Shinji you can't really relate to this guy. He's lacking resentment towards others which would've made his character a more believable boy, instead of being something like a shounen-fied BL bottom character or something. He keeps blaming himself but that's not how you'd write a beta male character (outside of some moralfag 'I can't fix him' woman's fantasy). A more believable one would be something like him being too submissive to reject being ordered around while constantly cursing everyone around inside his own head.
This fundamental mistake will become more apparent once they try to portray him as your regular simp (like Kazuya from Kusokari), only to make him like some loyal husbando material or some shit like that.
No.32820
>>32819It's just… he doesn't even do any mistakes, in the end. What is his actual plight in that episode? It's not the lack of sleep, he is a teen not some 40+ guy. Working in overdrive for some time is just gonna give him adrenaline, which should clear his headache too. So it's that he hasn't done the laundry and hasn't cleaned up the kitchen? That's it? What a weak story.
If they had characterized him as being brought up to 100% abide by traditional Japanese morals, I'd somewhat understand it. But he was characterized as an otaku that holds his own interest above social norms. You throw in some suggestions what they might have been going for but nothing really fits for me, and I don't feel any of the fixes would have fundamentally helped make this episode actually good.
>This fundamental mistake will become more apparent once they try to portray him as your regular simp (like Kazuya from Kusokari), only to make him like some loyal husbando material or some shit like that. Not to mention that the girl already likes him. So there's barely any development possible, they are practically already at the end line. What more is there to happen after he called her beautiful, and she's mindful of him looking at her body? And people tell me that the secondary characters don't really take center stage at any moment, it's always mostly these two. I went and scrolled through episode 5 too but it seems I really am done caring about this series.

The latest episode of Digimon: Ghost Game got kind of heavy, but unfortunately, it was ruined because the antagonist's actions were "justified" despite two people nearly being killed. It's called manslaughter, faggots, and just because he's helping his friends, doesn't make his actions excusable.
