The girls and mechs are pretty cute, but aside from that the only thing that's keeping me interested for now is the setting. I do love me my characters working for a shadowy orginization with unclear motives. As long as all this teen angst stays at a minimum I might find it watchable. Every other trigger show I'd dropped by the end of the second episode so by keeping my interest this long they're growing on me I guess.

This metaphor for sex is actually a metaphor for even more sex.

When your training pod has a female ass sex toy for you to stare at while you practice, is when you know you're in a Trigger anime.

This whole rear-genital-outline-through-tight-clothes thing has always struck me as really weird in an all-audiences context. Like yeah, it's correct, but you don't just do it as a matter of course. You have to design the outfit, pose, and camera angle for it.

It's actually stuff like this that keeps me from recommending shows like Flip Flappers to everyone. Maybe in the context of this story/studio it fits better, and maybe it's just me not being Japanese, but when the point isn't sex, going out of your way to show a character's genitals (even if not directly) seems, for lack of a better word, inappropriate. No less so because they're explicitly underage.

(Note that when it's something like Vividred Operation and underage genitals outlined through tight clothes from behind is in fact the entire raison d'être of the show, that's a different discussion entirely.)

>It's actually stuff like this that keeps me from recommending shows like Flip Flappers to everyone.
All's well that ends well then. If the result of this is that you refrain from hyping over-hyped shows and drawing people into a hobby they're not willing to learn to appreciate for what it is, I welcome it. You may think I'm being cynical, but I'm just echoing your words. You believe these people are better off not watching something they'd consider inappropriate, and I agree and merely add: so are the rest of us.

Sounds to me like your difficulties arise not from not being Japanese but from trying to force a particular set of values onto a work that wasn't built upon them. You postulate that late-night anime is an all-audiences medium, and that there should be a hard distinction between sex-is-the-point and sex-isn't-the-point works. Why? For the human mind sex is nearly always the point, and in fact if you were witnessing that scene from where the camera is you'd be checking out that dude's ass and balls just as I've been doing as I wrote this up. What is this composition and camera angle but an attempt to mimic that?

This isn't to say that sex shouldn't be the point of a show that's a running metaphor for sex. That'd be a valid point but it only applies to certain anime.

If a show isn't good enough to stand on its own despite some "objectionable content" then it isn't worth recommending anyway.
In any case, you should be recommending the classics to people rather than seasonal shit like Flip Flappers, especially now that anime is becoming mainstream and people are more willing to give good shows a chance.

Everything just seems to be going too well. All the partners that are supposed to be together are getting together and it's just a little boring to me right now. This anime, while not epoch-making, is good at what it tries to be, which is basically pornography. Obviously not only in the shallow sense, with the skin-tight suits and innuendo, but also in a broader sense, with the creepily biological mecha, the absurd size of things, the occasional religious terror, and pretty visuals in general. The writing and direction are at least good enough not to distract you from the porn with second-hand embarrassment.

Well did they make space really feel vast? Not really. Forget about that. There wasn't much of a meaningful build to it, nor meaningful time spend on it. It was all about the characters themselves and their masturbation over their rediscovery of humanity. The setting didn't matter.
Think about it, even TTGL. Not that I remember it that good, but I am pretty sure it had a little more of a build up to them going to space, though it was still kind of a sudden thing after the time skip. That said the "Earth" arc of it got a satisfying ending. In FranXX they didn't really achieve much of anything on Earth. They didn't win against anything. They didn't wage a war against the adults. Nothing of the sort. Things just changed and the characters, had little to no input on it.
What about the space arc of TTGL? I don't remember how long it was, but if I remember correctly that they didn't spend more than 2-3 episodes on Earth after the time skip, therefore most of the second half of the anime was in space. That's why it was a 3-cour anime. It wouldn't have worked otherwise. And it was a long, hard struggle to get to where they went. They had to suffer a lot, experience even more losses. With a journey of war and survival. In FranXX? One episode in Mars where the characters (mostly Zero Two and Hiro) fap to each other and then another episode of the same. They warped somewhere closer, though it still wasn't close enough. Regardless of that, it was only the two of them. Not much of a story to tell. Not much of a sacrifice to tell, other than just theirs. But they didn't even make it feel as they sacrificed themselves. Everyone believed everything is going to work out just fine anyway, even for the two of them. And it did. What about (TTGL spoilers, in case someone hasn't seen it) Simon and Nia? Or even to go further back, Kamina and Yoko? Even the rest of the cast. In FranXX the space was time skip after time skip. I mean, it made sense considering the plot, but the plot wasn't good to begin with. There was a lot of human fapping, but no real human drama. The suffering of the human struggle to exist. What we as humans might really see as what it is to be actually human, probably rightfully so, and relate the most to. In FranXX the characters were victories, but it doesn't feel like they won against anything. In TTGL they suffered and suffered and only then won. They won by losing the reasons they had for living. They won, yet the main characters remained living in suffering. Tragic heroes through and through.
So ultimately, in FranXX there was almost nothing to relate to, so it felt small and pointless.

I'm awful at articulating the reasons why I (dis)like something, and you explained every problem I have with the show. So thank you, anon!
Throughout the entirety of the show, I only felt emotionally invested once, and that was the little oni episode. Your comparison with TTGL is apt; the former's portrayal of conflict was done so much better than Franxx's depiction of war. There was too much space where I felt that little progression was occurring, and when it did occur, it wasn't compelling, and the subsequent moments felt disconnected.
I try to enjoy a show for what it is, and I really wanted to enjoy Franxx, but in the end, I felt like I wasted a bit of my time watching this series.

>One episode in Mars where the characters (mostly Zero Two and Hiro) fap to each other
>There was a lot of human fapping
I'm not sure if you're being literal or figurative. I hope it's literal.

I feel like people took this shit way too seriously, I thought it was just an entertaining mech show angsty teen drama. The TTGL shit at the end was just an extra fun bonus.

I'm sure some people did, but Franxx repeatedly fell below my threshold for entertainment of any kind. Hell, even the "twist" was boring to me.
I'm not picky; I just want something to entertain me so that I can forget about my shit life.

Space ended up being a honeymoon like they suggested: the climax of the story had already passed before they went to space, and it just physically represented their conclusions. You're right that a third cours would've been needed to flesh it out into a proper arc.

As for things to relate to and "winning" on Earth, it was characters vs. the environment with winning being producing the next generation. Not everyone will relate to that and it was absurdly rushed.

At least they made the ending look pretty, so I'm not exactly disappointed.
