No.21273
Aside from the obvious theme in episode 3, the episode also, perhaps coincidentally, metaphorizes the loss of alienation that Kanazawa experienced, as well as the price he had to pay to connect (bridge) himself with other humans. Why there were no frames or meshes that protects his ego, his own life, and the sole purpose of him living. Finally, the same other that dragged him out to death also reached out its hand toward him, a compassionate gesture by sharing out the food (which, not only important to Yuuri, but also objectively speaking they wouldn't live if they starve).
I think this accidental misinterpretation might emerge from the animation's attempt to be different in style from the manga; also to be more serious and dramatic (e.g. the inclusion of another element: Music). Not bad at all, I guess?
No.21277
>>21273tl;dr: it's a good adaptation.
The adaptation doesn't need to be trying to be different in style from the manga; if it's good, such things will naturally emerge.
No.21287
>>21273>(which, not only important to Yuuri, but also objectively speaking they wouldn't live if they starve).Yeah, this really struck me. Both of them had two things they lived for: Kanazawa for his maps and Yuuri for her food (at least, they gave themselves meaning through these). However by the end of the episode they both realised that the reason we live is for our connection with other people – something more important than anything else. Kanazawa lost his maps but connected with the girls, and Yuuri gave up her food but connected with Kanazawa. Was a really lovely episode.

Also you must note how the sunset is way before 6PM, because the timestamp in your shot is 18:07, and even the astronomical twilight had passed when they first entered the tubes. And that's a reasonable time, because they would have slept at some point if "18:07" was actually late.
Face it, it's November, so the days are short but the weather is still not too bad. It's the most obvious timestamp possible. So it's year 3230.
Though three hours and a half seem a little too short of a time period for the entire second half of the episode. I guess the oven was really fast.

I really hate this manga for the same reason I love it. I love the desolate theme to it. I love the whole exploration of, essentially the weightiest last piece in Pandora's Box, of Hope as something negative, the way the Greeks saw it.
But I hate it for the same reason. The manga has no good end in store and if it does then it'll come off as a cop-out or asspull. They've even had to burn their journals to survive, at that point there's really not going to be any way out like finding a new settlement or whatnot that doesn't feel like a copout. But I hate that, because while the desolate, depressive, 'hopelessness but accepting hopelessness' / 'learning to live with despair' setting is really quite innovative (most other series with such a desolate setting will tend to speak of light at the end of the tunnel, or they'll speak of some great noble cause, or whatever), the same theme makes it impossible for the cute potatoes to get a real 'good end', all they'd be able to do is come to terms with their demise before they die.
I should've fucking realized this from chapter one considering the title.
