What the fuck. Are they truly living in world-wide communist utopia? Is this what we get when the Chinese are making our anime now? Or was it like that in the manga as well?

Not quite like that, if I am to believe some rumors. Though, I must disagree with the "utopia" part. Obviously the heroines are troubled from living under communism. I guess the chinese staff could really empathize with that part of their characters, and the party didn't bother censoring it.

I'd say she's closer to the truth than Miss Perfect. In my opinion stuff like readymade art and the shit were supposed to be ironic and jabbing fun at the ridiculousness of the concepts that were prevalent at that time. But nowadays, as Miss Perfect says, there are new narratives, so the irony is completely forgotten. At the same time, I'm not sure these new narratives actually put a limit on the art itself. You just have to not commit a wrongthink in your EXPLANATION of the art.

Anyway, we've figured out the answer to this whole dilemma ages ago. We summarize it in one short sentence.
