 No.15087[Last 50 Posts]

For stuff not part of the current season.

I just watched Armitage III. I thought the first episode was pretty shit, it was overlong and everything that happened in it was pretty predictable. I'm glad I decided to watch the rest though, I enjoyed it more, but I'm still pretty confused about some of the details. I kinda wish they'd made all the episodes the same length and slowed things down a bit in the latter episodes instead of having the first episode twice as long.

I'm currently going through Princess Precure with friends. The quality sure fell fast, after the first two absolutely stellar episodes it's been completely mediocre. Even the CG is worse than HaCha, I think. Anyway, I also am accepting list of words I can find and replace "princess" with in the subtitle scripts. It'd be boring if I just swapped "princess" with "Nonoriri" in ALL episodes, no matter how funny it was the first time. "THE NONORIRI OF BLOOMING FLOWERS, CURE FLORA!"

For the record, the guys I am watching it with already recommended "Top Gun".

P.S. Kirara best cure.

Oh man. I'm sure no matter how old I get and how much anime I see, this episode will always stay as one of my favourites.

Man, Futari Wa is such a hard show to marathon. After witnessing such a beauty I need at least a week to recuperate emotionally. I was hit the same way several times already. It's just no fair. Not to mention the last few episodes were also great - not on the same level as this one, but I still needed time to bask in their gloriousness. Well, I will eventually finish the remaining seven episodes too. Tearful Nagisa in 43? They obviously know my fetishes well. I just first have to tell everybody how great 42 was.

I'm now eight episodes through Jinrui and I'm still not sure what the appeal of it is supposed to be. If I were to describe it in one word it would be "vague". A vague setting with vague characters making vague statements about the vague scenarios taking place for each two episodes. I certainly can't yet see why it receives all the praise it has, but I guess if it's from the last few episodes then I'm about to find out.

 No.15142

Nah, it is not about the last episode. In short it might be said that it is a smartass parody of a sort. Parody of life with a lot of subtext and a cunning main character without becoming LOLDEEP, just fun ridiculousness.

I found it quite enjoyable, although I very much so agree with not knowing why the praise for it is as high as it is.
The fairies nation/cty were the best episodes for me, but stuff like the time paradox episodes brought it down quite a bit.

If anything, the time paradogs is oft cited as the best arc. What can I say? Some people (including me) fucking love vague stuff. You had to wrack your brain in order to get some plot points, and the paradogs arc is probably the worst offender. But, even that aside, I admit lots of stuff was just vague. In my case it just sparks my imagination, and leaves me wondering whether Romeo did have an explanation weaved in or I'm trying to overanalyze it. This sort of engage with the series is something I personally really love, and I suppose I'm not alone in this.

Vagueness aside, it shares a lot of the same charm that Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei has, what with the social commentary being the main point of the series, and with the humor being somewhat darker. And yeah, the smartass main character also helps. And it had superb animation, voice actors and music. And the time paradogs arc had the best moral ever: "The best company you can ever have is you yourself. Lots of yous."

 No.15146

>>15141
I loved Jinrui. Besides the dark humor, I really enjoy atypical presentation and I found the way Jinrui presented itself, its characters, and its world to be really fun and intriguing. It might just come down to how much you enjoy the characters themselves, but I think the praise is mostly because it's abstract and different.

 No.15147

Added on to that, I think that it's one of the few anime to do an episodic series well all the way through. Each story explores a different possibility of dealing with insane and unpredictable fairies. My biggest complaint about it is that there wasn't more of it, because the premise has incredible potential and I would have liked to explore some more of the possibililities.

Well, I've finished it now. I've gotta say, the MC displayed more personality in the last four episodes than she had for the first eight. Episodes 9 and 10 were by far my favourites.
It didn't have much of an ending though, and I guess I'm still bothered by how little you actually found out about the state of humanity or how we ended up like that.

>>15145
I'm not really sure what the point of that arc was, beyond being a very long set up for the paradogs joke. I didn't like that arc much at all, mostly due to the amount of repetition involved where nothing actually new happened, which was frustrating to sit through.
I'm not sure why you say the animation was great either, because it was pretty average. The backgrounds were nice, though.

>>15146
I liked the MC, but that's about it, really. Silver didn't have anything going for her beyond her yaoi obsession until the last episode, and I think the yaoi focus spoiled an otherwise interesting idea in the manga arc. Assistant was essentially an anti-character outside of that part of episode 8, and Grandpa didn't really have anything outside of cleaning guns and "I think you should suffer a bit, little girl".
The fairies were probably the most entertaining part of it but I'm not sure if you could really call them characters.

Uh, I don't actually remember? Maybe? I remember the assistant's origins being mysterious and not explained, and I was left wondering how the fuck was he the last, but I'm too lazy to watch the arc again to see if they give the "species" thing in direct text. Toldya, it's by far the worst offender in the respect of hard to comprehend plot points. Objectively speaking, this is a bad side of it. They even repeated the whole episode, practically, trying to explain everything, but even like this it comes off unclear and vague. However, some people like this effect. It's like a puzzle, you have to fit the pieces yourself. Of course, if you aren't already interested in what the picture is, you would never bother solving the puzzle, so it will just fall flat. Looking at the bigger picture, though, I've heard rumors stuff like that is par for the course for a Romeo work.

That being said, I, like you, find the last episodes much better. In my case especially the last two, in the school.

I know Romeo's name quite well but when I looked him up the only things of his I've read are Kana, Cross Channel, and Rewrite. I didn't get very far in Cross Channel, but Rewrite and Kana were both fairly straightforward, the former assuming you did all the routes. (Rewrite is amazing, so you should go read it, if you haven't.)

> It's like a puzzle, you have to fit the pieces yourself. Of course, if you aren't already interested in what the picture is, you would never bother solving the puzzle, so it will just fall flat.

Yeah, I usually work under the assumption that things I'm confused about will be explained further down the line, and as such I don't spend too much time analysing each episode, especially when I'm not waiting for weekly episodes. Gotta say, if I'd stopped and thought about episodes 7 and 8 for ten seconds, it would've been pretty obvious.

This was a good watch. Even with all the bad parts and the fair amount of bullshit (I'm just about fine with one character presumed dead showng up on a colony halfway across space with next to no explination, but two is just ridiclous) it's been a while since I've got so into a show. I think it did a pretty good job of staying true to the original series while improving on it and adding in enough new elements for it to seem somewhat original.
I did start to lose interest towards the end once everyone had got their shit together and it became clear who the big bad was, especially seeing as all Creuset was out to do was be a dick and the rest of the villans wern't as interesting as the will they/wont they thing Kira and Athrun had going on.

I finally got done watching Planetes, and I have to say I think it was one of the best things I've seen in a while. I really like how it got into the ethical implications of space development and was still able to end in a way that left me feeling pretty good. The "everyone's connected" message might be a little cheesy, but personally I think it's a good message, and it was presented in a powerful way that was still realistic about where that idea fails. 10/10 would watch again.

Well in the end I suppose it was mostly alright. Shirota got largely sidelined after Saeki was introduced, only for Saeki to go through the same character development that Shirota already had.
Most of the cast wasn't particularly developed, with Shirota, Momoi, and Aoyama being the only ones to get proper character arcs. Early on Akagi seems oddly passionate about protecting people's homes, which seemed to imply him having a trauma, perhaps from having lost his home in the first Heterodyne attack, but then it never comes up again and Akagi ends up being the least developed of the main cast. The side characters barely got anything at all, despite having a decent amount of screentime.

The episodes around the middle got a bit too bogged down with repeatedly putting 21st Century Security against the army, and there was a jarring change of animation director for episodes 21 and 22.
While the last Heterodyne made for a great finale, the ending wasn't particularly good and offered pretty much no closure, with everyone still fighting Heterodynes and no end in sight, with the only resolution being that the final Heterodyne we saw was defeated safely.
I somewhat get the impression that it was envisioned as being a long-running series, but didn't do well enough for that to happen.

Also, Irie is best girl.

I just finished Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. The first half was good but I think the twist of the last third and the ending really hurt the show. It was blatantly obvious from the moment it happened, and got more and more obvious as time went on, yet they still presented it as some big revelation when they finally outright stated what had happened. I think it would've been much more interesting if they'd never taken such an approach with the twist and instead provided the perspective from Mari's side while being honest about what had happened and Mirai being broken down. As is what was an interesting disaster story turned into a shitty drama instead.

I've been watching Zeta Gundam now that IBO is over. When I watched Victory and G-Reco I found them quite hard to follow, and now I'm seeing with Zeta that this seems to be a common trait of Tomino's shows. They spend very little time explaining the setting or introducing characters, which makes it hard to remember many of them or follow the plot. Episode 6 had Kamille suddenly infatuated with Reccoa, a person who I had no idea who she was before this episode. It also added another ship tagging along with the White Base 2.0, which got introduced, brushed over, and then destroyed with just as little notice.

Kamille also sure is a little shit. The first episode had him punching Jerid for making a passing remark about his name, and attacking the MP for being rude to him, and then when he gets his shit kicked in for ignoring an assembly call he cries that he's just getting hit for no reason and one shouldn't resort to violence.

Hell, it's only now in episode 11 that someone made an offhand comment that the Titans were formed to track down Zeon remnants. I'm not sure that anyone in Zeta has said what the A.E.U.G. stands for yet. (Though after checking episode 1 again, the dub track plainly said Anti-Earth Union Group while the subtitles just used the abbreviation.)

Way too much time spent on some shitty plot and not enough silly fun. Zest in particular seemed criminally underused. I though it was pretty strange how irrelevant she seeing as she's the latest addition to the harem. It's like the writers didn't have any idea what to do with her at all. Which annoyed me especially since the only reason I watched this in the first place was my weakness for brown girls.

I really fail to understand the point of this movie. There wasn't much story or meaningful progression of anything. Tuan was investigating things, but it wasn't a mystery. It was mostly just backstory that doesn't matter, explaining some futuristic technology and some monologues and delusions that supposedly Tean thinking about psychophysical things. But it is not like there was any criticism about anything. Humans can be barbaric? Well, duh. The Lifeism thing people would naturally think is suppose to be a creepy utopia, but there wasn't really much criticism of it either. Miach was able to talk for 2 or 3 minutes how she was raped, but then she spoke of the neighbour kid killing itself, because it felt like not belonging. That is it. "It kills with kindness." The end. Nothing else to say about it. I don't really understand why Tuan was surprised by Miach intentions, I thought it was suppose to be a known thing by this point. Miach being born in a bloodline with natural lack of concious, having harmony, was very stupid and it seems like the author might be lacking in imagination when it comes to humans. The whole movie can be compressed to the last 10 minutes and talking about human concious and choice, but even then not much was said. Now people have no concious, so there is harmony. Wuuu spooky skeletons under the bed. Honestly for me this movie is overall bellow average.

>The Lifeism thing people would naturally think is suppose to be a creepy utopia, but there wasn't really much criticism of it either.

It's not just "killing with kindness" and being forced to conform to a health life as mandated by officials, but there's also surveillance and having your body connected to a server 24/7.

>There wasn't much story or meaningful progression of anything.

I think this is because the ending lacked some punch as the conclusion Tuan chose was basically throw everything away for harmony except Miach.

I feel like the movie failed to deliver some minor but important details to smooth out the whole story but I'll have to re-read the novel to find those out as it has been years.

Being connected to a server didn't seem to be much of a problem for anyone. And while some mild brainwashing was probably happening in the counselling, the society was moving by its own wish for a healthy, long and prosperous life. They didn't really show us any negatives, nor how heavily any of this is truly forced on people. Did I miss a "you have to get this job" system? As far as I can tell the kid that hung itself could have done anything it wanted. How was it being oppressed so much it had to die? It sounds like teenager bullshit. They didn't monitor thought or/and prevented crimes with world-wide monitoring. There were even plenty of people living without being on WatchMe and the mysterious faces didn't seem worry about subjugating them even though in the new harmony world they could be quite dangerous. It is not like they didn't have the power to be as totalitarian as they want, considering they were able to kill the concious of everyone in the system, but interestingly enough they even lacked the power to censor the media even when it was for something positive as to not create panic all over the world.

I don't really see what you mean by "throwing away everything." Tuan could not have prevented anything. In fact in a quite cinematic scene the harmony was activated why she was in the middle of nowhere not able to do anything. All she did was kill her friend, so she would not lose the personality that she loved. Not even for the dead of her father that she pretended to care about earlier. She just acted on her lesbian instincts.

I watched Shisha no Teikoku too. It was pretty much the same, except 200 years earlier. You could say at least that there was a story, but it all go down basically the same road of concious/soul without saying much. Supposedly Itoh didn't finish it himself, but I don't think it would have mattered. I really don't understand why he is so praised. I don't know, maybe he has a way with words, I haven't read the books, but his stories are nothing special.

On the side note, RIP Manglobe.

Just got done with the original Berserk anime. I'm a little dissapointed that they left some stuff out and the battle scenes were often just panning over static images (probably still better than cg shit though) but I guess it was about as good as an adaption as I could have hoped for. It's not like Alpenrose was only bad sides.

The Count. Damn, I'm in love. Especially after this scene in the last episode, it was so fucking cool. He made pretty much every episode he had screentime in better. Ruined Ambition was the best episode in the series. And so on. Certainly shone, especially when compared to most of the other villains, who had zero characterization or sense.

The butler. He was surprisingly competent. Not once or twice, constantly.

The stupid henchmen were okay too. Also, damn stupid.

The redhead from The Lonely Piano. She was cool, why did they forget her so fast?

Leon was okay. Though he should have scored with Randi.

The pacing wasn't bad, nothing was drawn out too much.

That being said, this anime also had plenty of bad sides. When it wasn't a disgusting soap opera, it was so lackluster with the plot that I'm left to wonder why did they even try. They could have kept to the soap opera. The main characters' strongest points were how bullyable were they. Frankly, I was surprised to see even shred of common sense in the last few episodes, when they told Leon to not walk around trying to get in trouble. They obviously changed staff and animation directors at least several times, though the quality was constantly low. And the rip I watched had earcancer audio, but that's another question.
Fuck it, let's end this on a high note. Really, the Count was so great that he almost made the whole experience worth it.

The problem with Climb is that we get his PoV for entire chapters at a time for some godawful reason. Unlike Lizards, which at the very least didn't actually think using Fairy Tail tier logic, or Dwarves, who didn't actually eat up that much perspective time and were generally like Lizards in their thinking, Climb is in the wrong series and isn't being played for laughs, making him utterly insufferable.
There's irony in that every significant character BUT Climb knows Renner is everything Climb thinks she isn't, but this only makes it more annoying when he goes off on long rants about her perfection, especially with Renner actually acting that way around him.
I'm seriously waiting for Renner to angel-fy herself or whatever she's going to do with that item so Climb can fall into the pit of despair trying to compete with Demiurge, I've had enough of the faggot. He doesn't even have the whole underdog thing going for him, Gazef flat out said Climb will never be a great warrior like Brain or himself, and the only way he'll ever pose any sort of threat to Nazarick is with something like World Saviour or Lance of Longinus which just reeks of asspull.

>I suppose I'm just not a fan of the adventuring stuff

The adventuring stuff isn't really the focus even during the adventures. Volume 2 was just about the only adventuring volume if I remember correctly and it was mainly build-up for Momon to become a living legend and for Ainz to learn stuff about the world. Volume 3 was Shalltear and Ainz preparing to fight / fighting the strongest guardian.

And finished S1. That second half was rather a chore. The show was much better when focused on light-hearted adventuring than the serious plot, and the second half had nonsense like a second dark lord and the Giga Slave being a spell using the power of another dark lord which could destroy the world if cast incorrectly, which raises the questions for the viewer of how Lina learnt it, who else would know it or have used it in the past, and how anyone would know it would destroy the world given it clearly hasn't been cast incorrectly yet, but the show does nothing to address any of those. And then they beat Copy Rezo at the end by just stumbling across a legendary sword in a cave.

I hope the following series do a better job of world building if they're going to keep on with fighting dark lords and saving the world.

Hurrah, the tags are fixed now.

I just got around to Dangan Ronpa 3 after deciding to put it off until finishing UDG. It had a pretty strong start but shat itself towards the end with stupid twists, retcons, the fucking atrocious episode that followed up UDG, and poor explanations in general.

Junko has her character motivation retconned into being that she has super analytical powers, and so she's bored with the world and seeks despair because it's random and unpredictable. Which is a decent enough motivation, but not when they're only introducing it now.
Jataro, Nagisa, and the other kid that died in UDG are retconned to be alive as they appear in the UDG episode with zero explanation. Komaru and Fukuwa were apparently aware that Monaka was still alive the entire time but only bothered to go after her when the UDG episode rolled along, at which point she's revealed to be a NEET who finds her despair obsession from UDG to be an embarrassing memory because she found Nagito annoying, which is an absolutely horrid way to follow up UDG's genuine atrocities with shitty humour as she gets away with it scot-free.
Kamukura is shown in episode 6 or 7 awaiting the coming fleet with his long hair and red eyes, but when he appears in the final episode he has Hinata's hair and one green eye.
UDG seems to imply that Nagito was never actually inflicted with despair, and was instead just such a hope maniac that it didn't matter to him, and that he was a counter to Junko, with Junko aiming to give people hope only to show them despair, while Nagito gave people despair so that they would overcome it with hope, but DR3 totally drops this.

There's no explanation given for how Munakata managed to survive and get by for so long with a hole through his shoulder and then later his stomach, and then cutting his arm off on top of that (and it's also ridiculous that no one had tried that until then).
Mitarai is perhaps the most ridiculous part. There's no explanation of how he managed to survive the Incident or end up with Future Foundation, and Chisa and Tengan were both aware that he was responsible for the videos that caused the Incident, so presumably others would be too. It's crazy to think that he wouldn't have been assumed to be a Despair himself, or at least persecuted or attacked for it, which we never see. Tengan's whole plan was also retarded and it makes no sense that he had to start killing people to make Mitarai broadcast the video, and they never bother to explain why he had to be pushed to do this in the first place. They also flip back and forth on whether or not Tengan was inflicted with Despair after the reveal.
At the end the Remnants make a broadcast implicating themselves as the perpetrators of the killing game in order to save people the despair of knowing Tengan did it, as the writers completely overlook that this will implicate Makoto for having harboured them despite that the broadcast has now shown them to be clearly still Despair-inflicted, so Makoto is absolutely fucked as a result, and they all get on a boat to nowhere instead of staying and atoning for their sins by helping fight the Despairs while showing that Makoto saved them, which would have been a far more hopeful conclusion. Also, DR3 claimed that Makoto was brought to the tower to be questioned about harbouring them before having found out if they were cured or not, which blatantly contradicts DR2's ending.

And of course, this is topped off by all the dead characters from DR2 being brought back to life by Kamukura, which at least can be partially excused by DR2's ending implying there was possible hope for them, but they kill off Kirigiri and then bring her back to life with a magic potion that she apparently got from Seiko despite only having seen her for a second when examining her, which Seiko never had any time or resources to make, and which Kirigiri didn't tell anyone about, despite potentially being able to save several lives. This one is just a complete ass pull for the sake of a super happy ending instead of a bittersweet one. Chiaki is still dead, so why compromise?
Oh, and Makoto didn't even do anything at the end. Good job, Hope.

As an aside, this actually had some of most gruesome and violent content I've seen in a TV anime, so I'm surprised it was able to air with as little censorship as it got.

After some further thought, the way that Makoto is so totally irrelevant to the ending shit all over DR3 as a whole, given how the first episode ends with Monokuma telling him that it would be their last and greatest game of despair vs hope and the final battle of Naegi Makoto, so it totally failed to deliver on that front. It also makes no sense when you consider what Tengan's motives for setting up the game were and that they didn't really even have anything to do with Makoto being there, so there was no reason for him to have created a message like that. Just one more fuckup on the pile, I guess.

For example, it would have been nice to see more of the king, the politics in his city and his realtionship with Joan. I wanted to see more of the angel and demon societies and how they intereacted, from right after Bahamut was sealed however many years ago up to the present day. Also the relationship between Beelzebub and the main bad guy would have been nice to see. I want to know how exactly he approched him and conviced him that waking up the doomsday dragon would be in his best interest.
Pretty excited for the new series now, hopefully the new MC will be at least a little more interesting than amira and Rita better get plenty of screentime.

Yeah, back when I was watching it I didn't know it was only going to be one cour, and so when the semi-final episode rolled around I was thinking "boy, this plot sure is getting crazy for only halfway through". It's a shame, it would've been pretty great as a two cour show.

God damn that final episode. I thought this was just all going to be little standalone stories but it's got me all hyped up for next season now.
Aside from the last one, I think Shinobu's episode was clearly the best with the cutest punchline but Senjougahara's was also up there as the punchline tickled me a little. Other than that, I didn't care for the stories too much, but it's the same old characters so I had enough fun watching it.

I'm pretty let down by this. A show about a group of friends playing an MMO for the sake of being the best with no massive real world implications whether they win or lose sounds like it could be pretty good to me, but the writing is just so utterly shit and it's full of the same old shounen tropes. I did stick with it for a while but around 16 episodes in we've got a blackmail plotline, which are a pet hate of mine, introduced the power of belif being able to change shit in the game, i.e. a bullshit superpower to save the MC instead of him figuring out a way to win for himself, and on top of that the MC is still the same whiny peice of shit that he was at the very start of the series. I probably should have expected this considering who wrote it.
At the very least, it fueled my fetish for cute robogirls, but I sure as hell can't be fucked to finish this series for them.

What a fucking cop out. I might have forgiven this show all it's faults if it at least had a good ending but Celty just fixes everything was so boring I didn't even consider that it might happen. Probably it is the most about who was the centre of attention. Most of the time in season one was spend on the 3 teenage main characters and them being high schoolers did play a role in their arcs. After that they are not only less of high schoolers as characters, the story overall branched even more to the rest of the cast, including a lot of new cast too.

That was one of my least favourite things about it actually. Mikado was one of the few characters I was really interested in following after the first cour, so I was pretty let down by how little screentime he got.
Also who the fuck was this guy? I vaguely remember him from the first season but it seemed so strange to me that with all the new characters they introduced that one of the main antagonists was someone who had such little screentime. Then again, I get the impression that the author is adverse to actually harming any of the relevant characters so it makes sense in that way I guess.

 No.17973

>>17969
Well we definitely differ in that, because to me he was the most boring out of all. In retrospection it is probably because he was the annoying normal guy trying so hard to not be normal that he went full edgy.
You mentioned not liking that the end was around Celty, but a big point in the series from the start to the end, and just that more talked about in the second part, was that Celty was the ignition key to most of what was happening in Ikebukuro. The presence of her magical self alone was what made a lot of people seek the same magic for their own lives and so they acted trying to break out of their normal lives to the extend they made the abnormal daily. Though there were also some people that instead of trying too hard were actually able to loosen up and be more free with their action as they would be justified and accepted just as another part of the Ikebukuro's craziness. So everything being somehow connected to Celty and ending with Celty was very much where the story was going.
All of that said the person we as viewers and readers are closest to are the background characters of Ikebukuro, which are just listening about stuff on the news and from time to time might see something intense happening nearby. But they are really not a part of the magical. In a way at the end Mikado himself had to stand in front of Celty and realize for himself that no matter how close he was to her he himself was still not the pure magic she is.
Though I watched the original Durarara!! in 2010, when it aired, and followed this one while it was airing and considering I don't myself remember who that guy from the pic was, I am just sort of pulling stuff out of my ass. So especially with the last episode being a lot fresher to you might think I am talking bullshit about it.

 No.17975

>>17973
My problem was what she did was that she just shows up and takes the blame for everything the characters have done. I think at that point Mikado was already sick of trying to be abnormal yet didn't know how to stop, hence the suicide attempt. What I thought she did for him was just absolve him of all responsibility for his actions and I detest that after all shit that he pulled at the end he can just go back to normal like nothing at all happened. It's the sort of ending that makes me not care about the sequel at all, because I just feel that the author will have all the same characters go through similar motions again and again and never really go anywhere with them.

Ghost Hound was quite nice. They managed to wrap up a lot more subplots than I thought they would be able to. Sasuga Shirow. It's kind of beautiful how everything by itself wasn't that complicated, but it was hard to separate what mattered to what plot, and what didn't.

That being said, all the moms in this anime were trash. And only one mom got any character development - or at least character study - to make her a little more relatable, even if no less trash. The fathers were generally better, and the gang themselves were quite engaging and likable, and practically every one of them got some sort of vindication in the last episode. But the subplots of the moms were just ignored, even more than the almost red herring of the animal spirit forms.
And then there's Miyako's subplot, that I'm not completely sure I understand. We know she can sense the supernatural, and if a supernatural being enters some range around her, she can also see it. But does she have shamanistic qualities? Can she channel spirits? Or was it just a fucked up sense of self-identity? Certainly the last episode seems to imply the last part. Which is slightly weird, because it means my mind is more willing to accept that Miyako can summon hair fairies at will than to accept that Miyako was possessed by the God of One Word. I mean, if she indeed was possessed, that plotline was left completely hanging in the air, much worse than the moms that just got no backstory or relatability.

And then there was the actual red herring with the spirit that relives his death again and again, and how he deepthroated some random fucker. I think the only consequence of this was that the fucker started seeing the spirits from time to time.

That being said, the use of scientific terms borders between mind-numbing and interesting, depending on whether you feel like researching them a little more by yourself while the episode is waiting for you, or not. To contrast with this, the dialect they were speaking in was so bonkers that I couldn't help but constantly notice it (suimasheen). As for the other technical sides of this series besides scriptwriting, the animation suffered from sameface syndrome, so much that it actively detracted from viewing enjoyment from time to time for me. On the other hand, the soundtrack was 10/10.
Especially the opening theme.

And that's about all I can say before I start ranking who the best husbando would be. Great FukuJun role, by the way.

This is first Tokusatsu show I've watched outside of Garo, liked it much more. Only had a few filler episodes compared to most of Garo being monster of the week which is far more my thing. Felt my enjoyment of it dropped of a little in the 2nd half though, what with the overlords and both mitchy and Kaito (mostly mitchy) being massive shits. Still overall pretty good. Not sure where to go next, might go with fourze or maybe jump back to some of the original ones.
Oh also it annoyed me quite a bit that Triumphant Arms wasn't his final form, looked far better than Kiwami Arms.

Gaim was pretty great and from what I understand no other KR series is much like it. I definitely wouldn't recommend Fourze; I watched that a few months ago and it really wasn't good at all, especially compared to Gaim. It has pretty much nothing happen at all until episode 30-something where the plot finally goes somewhere for a few episodes, then it's more episodic rubbish. There are dozens of totally wasted characters and the whole shtick of the MC wanting to be friends with everyone is kind of wasted when most of the people he helps never show up again. Also, it's loaded with crappy CGI from an earlier time than Gaim. Basically the only good thing about Fourze is that the director clearly likes legs.
The only other KR series I've seen so far is Black, and while largely episodic, I liked that a lot more. It helped that it had much better SFX and monsters. I'm thinking of watching Amazon next.

Speaking of Garo, I'm going through the first season of that now, actually. It's definitely on the monster of the week side, and I don't like the rival character one bit, especially since he looks like a pansy too.

Finally watched Shirobako. It's suffering from all the flaws I expected it to have, back when I dropped it after the first episode nearly three years ago. Frankly, it was really fucking hard to ignore Tarou, or the fake drama. No conflict, no reasonable character development, no nothing. The whole saga around the editor in the second half was simply inexcusable, and ruined any immersion or believability. You can't just slap in non-characters like the editor or Tarou and expect them to work in a cast that at least resembles human beings and has at least hint of reality to it.
But, as long as you manage to ignore the fake drama and the Tarous of the anime, it was quite the enjoyable SoL about anime production. I wish the ADs kissed at the end. Smug Erika best girl. Ms Diesel also best girl. The Rec ripoff was boring. The half-words girl was funny, especially in her jealousy. There are at least a dozen of characters that left stronger impressions in me than Emi and the CGi girl. Aoi-jou was a competent protagonist. I expected her sanity to suffer more… actually, let me correct myself. I would have preferred her sanity to suffer more. I still can't understand how the fatty turned into bishie. I still remember that one time it happened in Basquash. Hiraoka was okay, he was the least fake of all the drama in this riddled with fake drama anime. The old guy was cool. But, more than any of the characters, what makes this SoL enjoyable is how you as the audience know how you'd personally react to these staffing choices. At the same time you get their slice of life from their own eyes, and you're completely aware how the whole situation looks like from the outside. Which is nice and shit. It's pretty much a must-watch for any anime fan who follows at least a little what staff makes each series. If only the writing was better, and they didn't depend on fake drama…

Just watch the Index-tan movie. It has all important scenes, all important plot points from the movie, in short it has everything.

Although, the film did have a few seconds with Misaka Imouto, and even a few seconds of Misaka Imouto are more than enough of a reason to waste hour and a half on it.

P.S. She can fight in vacuum, and can survive atmosphere re-entry? How can she possibly lose any fight ever?
P.P.S. The film went with the boring scenario. The idol should have been the father reborn into a little girl.

That aside, the first third was a lot of episodic stuff and was kind of interesting, the second third was more episodic stuff that was half awful and half great, and then the last third was pretty good. But before jumping into the next season I'm going to try watching Hikari Sentai Maskman.

Maria was fucking great. I mean, I'd heard it has accurate depiction of historical european martial arts, which is totally my fetish, but it had one more design element that I totally didn't expect. It had actual New Testament-style angels. The japs always portray the angels as either kind of bad, or as something closer to Lawful Evil than to anything else. You know, if you want to ground it in actual Christianity, you'd say they are Old Testament-style at best. But not in Maria. Power-hungry church, yes, but the angels weren't oppressors, even considering the plot of the anime.

Setting aside, though, it was a good series anyway, with decent writing and lively characters with sympathetic worldviews. Practically all of them. Maybe the sociopath monk wasn't exactly the most relatable, but he was still a decent portrayal of a sociopath. If I have to complain, it is that the first few episodes don't do much to sell the series to you. There is a huge chance you'd just skip it, thinking the HEMA will be an irrelevant gimmick, and the angels will be the same LE as everywhere else, and the story will be sugary and so on, thus concluding that there isn't much of a point in watching it, even if it isn't showing too many bad flags. But in actuality it's a nice series.

Aw man, Junketsu no Maria threads were the best back when the series was airing. Small enough that the shitposting was minimal and actual discussion could take place. The nerding over the well researched medieval warfare shit was fun and educative. We had a moonfag help translate animator's notes on each episode. Remember when Galfa is beating that one asshole with a sword he's holding by the blade? Even the animators were weirded out that was a real thing.

Regarding the plot, I enjoyed it but felt the end was unimpressive. It left me with the impression that Maria hadn't learned anything at the end of it all. But then again, I can't imagine any other end to the series. Also, it has been a while since it aired and I can't say I remember all details about the plot, I just remember the impression it left me with.

I do remember the end of the nutso monk being fucking awesome at the time. The discussions THAT generated were amazing. It was such a fun show to follow with the internet.

Holy shit I'm actually upset none of the 4chan archives seem to have anything from back then. All of the fun, theological debates, and Ezekiel wanking circles have been lost to the ether! I remember with especial fondness when we learned that Galfa's prosthetic arm was based on a real one from back then. Like, could you actually have expected a show called "Maria the Virgin Witch" to be so fucking educational on the medical technological advances of bloody medieval France?

There were two big shitposting moments in the series, the first being - obviously - the dog thing, and later the wuestion of "DID GALFA REALLY RAPE HER/IT WAS JUST THE TIP". Amonng that, well, Ezekiel was everyone's favorite pigeon to bully.

I actually saved a post from back then, because I liked it so much. It's about Joseph Vs angel: You stand between me and my Witch. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living mortal or Messenger of Heaven, I will smite you, if you touch her.

Watching these tiny shows with /a/ is one of the main reasons I'm not lazy and just wait for seasons to finish. I recently watched Samurai Flamenco and holy shit, what a ride that was. I can only imagine how fun that must have been to watch with friends.

Looking back to it, of course it's based on a real arm. Why did I even doubt that.
The dog thing?
Even little girls bully Poppy-chan.

I often save posts, exactly because I've seen too many archives die on me. Joseph was probably one of the more lackluster characters in this anime. I liked even the cat familiar more.

I was disappointed by Samenco, tho. The fifth episode was so out of place, that everything after that I just couldn't accept as real. And indeed, the reveal in the end was that it wasn't exactly real. Even so, once I'd lost the suspension of disbelief, I didn't really feel like following it or shitposting with 4chan about it. I actually finished the second half of the series like an year later. But the threads about the first four episodes were quite nice indeed. I wish we could get an entire anime like them.

Remember when maria goes "I don't care about sex, I'd even give my virginity to a dog"? That's the dog thing. And you may want to check out the manga! There's no Bernard or Galfa, but Joseph is quite different.

I think the reason I liked SamuMenco so much was exactly why you didn't like it, haha! The moment I realized the show was just going to do its own demented thing was amazing. The PM is a villian with a suit powered by the approval of the people. An alien voiced by Akira Ishida. It was all so mad that Goto's thing with his girlfriend felt almost sobering. It was just… such an experience. Never before had an anime taken me for a ride that way! But I definitely get how it is different from people to people, lol.

I really agree about all the characters having sympathetic worldviews though.
This is probably my favorite moment in the whole show, when you see how genuinely overjoyed this kid is to see an angel.
He is so incredibly honored to be asked a question by an angel. And you really see how sincerely dedicated he is to his religion, so it becomes impossible to blame him for hating Maria, especially after his religion is basically confirmed fact.
All the normal townsfolk believe in angels, but aren't particularly god-fearing, so they just answer normally. But Gilbert responds as if he has been waiting for this moment his entire life.

>Why is there a celtic god in France?
Actually, the eyes point towards it also being an Old God. Maybe Nyarlathotep, he has eyes like that, Cernunnus is never portrayed with three eyes, afaik. Makes me think Jesus was also a witch, who transcended to God. That's probably the aspect of the worldbuilding that interests me the most.

>>19781
I thought the townfolk just didn't really realize what's going on, but I guess it's kind of the point that for them both witches and angels are part of the "normal", so they act normally around them. My favourite moment with Gilbert however was when he realized all the medicine he had been using up to then was produced by a witch.

Most of them stopped what they were doing and got on their knees, so they knew what was going on.
It's not that angels are normal to them, it was still their first time seeing one, they just don't doubt their existence. It's kind of like if the King showed up and started asking questions, no one there has ever met the king and he is very important and famous. But it's not like you'd be shocked to learn he exist. Like why wouldn't he? Everyone says he does, so he does.
So you just kneel politely and answer.
The only ones with big reactions are those in the church who understand more about an angels significance.

Man I just realized when Bernard tries to attack Micheal, Gilbert calls out to Micheal rather than Bernard. That's awesome.

This >>19790. I'm currently watching it and it's pretty good. I personally expected a stupid but fun damedame anime much like leviathan, fantasista doll or ange vierge. It's a bit like those in that it requires that you accept some unnecessarily stupid things and just sit back and enjoy, but beyond that entry barrier it plays out quite differently.

I'm amazed at how it manages to marry the serious and silly aspects. I'm watching these cute girls flying through space in magical flying not-brooms that make car noises, and I genuinely care for the characters and am moved by their story arcs, I am honestly intrigued by the more enigmatic plot points, and, above all, the increasing distances at which things take place, together with the sense of scale that underlies some scenes, successfully inspire in me a feeling that I guess I should call awe.

I don't want to blow this so out of proportion that I'll cause potential viewers to be disappointed instead, but there is silliness, there is cuteness, there is space porn, there is hype, and there can be other things if you're lucky.
