Not particularly. There's a few decent things and it's not the worst season I've ever come across, but it's pretty down there. Worse than last season and next season has a bunch of things I'm looking forward to so I'll be pretty okay when this one's over in about a month.
It's been a nice season for working through my backlog, at least.

>>15028Nobody has spoiled Boku Dake to me yet, so I'm still enjoying the ride. I must admit the atmosphere is 10/10, and frankly that's the thing I care the most in any anime. It's the strength of this medium, if I wanted good story, I'd read a fucking book.
That aside, I'm quite happy with this season. Heavy Object only got better, and watching these beautiful Balalaikas is like a blessing to my eyes. KonoSuba is on course to be one of my favourite comedy shows of this decade. Dagashi Kashi is a great adaptation, and the Rakugo anime is going strong. I'm also enjoying several other series, like Grimgar, Active Raid and Dimension W. What more can I want?
No.15053
Of all the shows I started this season, GATE, BokuMachi, Active Raid, Rakugo, KonoSuba, Galko, Koukaku no Pandora, Grimgar, and Nijiiro Days are the only ones I'm still keeping up with.
BokuMachi, Rakugo, and KonoSuba are definitely the highlights, though I'm also enjoying Pandora and Grimgar a lot. I don't know why I'm still even watching Active Raid with how bad that's gotten.

Active Raid and Dagashi Kashi are so boring.
No.15121
>>15120I wouldn't call Active Raid boring, just massively inconsistent. I thought the first two episodes were okay, the third was possibly my favorite thing that's aired this season, the one after that was absolutely dire and it's been a mixed bag since then. I'm excited to see what's in store each week but half the time I do end up a little disappointed.
I'm hoping now that each character has had their episode the plot should kick off and it'll start getting a little more coherent.
No.15123
>>15121I would say Active Raid is written through an obvious retroish mecha/hero fanboyism. Or alternative trying to make it look like it is. I don't know who is responsible for this, but the anime is all over the place and not really very engaging. It has been mostly using nostalgia and mediocre character interactions so far.

>>15134Pretty much this. Showing closeups of the killer in episode 1 was a mistake to begin with.
I also think the quality dropped instantly as soon as they saved Hinazuki. Was anyone actually interested in the actual murder mystery in the first place? The theme of getting a second chance at correcting your childhood mistakes was what got me interested. Kid trying to outsmart serial killer, not so much. Feels like it went from suffering to Home Alone in less than an episode.
The series could have ended two episodes ago, for all I care.
No.15188
At this point the "flashback" of Rakugo has become so interesting that I'm not sure I even want to return to the initial future setting. But we'll need to get a second season for that to happen anyway.
I understand GATE now. All the buildup and smaller stories are what makes it worthwhile each time we get to see the JSDF blow the fuck out of the imperial scum. I sure hope the warrior bunny gets her comeuppance before this season ends though.
>>15184You mean the Intelligence Matrix? Yeah, they just pulled that shit out of nowhere. This show has just become a good example of how not to tell a story. If they'd brought that up throughout the show and made it known as tech that exists in this world there wouldn't have been any problem, but last episode was the first we'd heard of it. What a joke.
No.15220
Well Active Raid ended up being awful, and BokuMachi shit itself with an anime original ending.
What a shame.
The worst part is I think both of them could have turned out significantly better if they'd been two cour instead.

No.15230
>>15228I didn't know that, but I meant in the sense of them having told this story over two cours. With how badly they've just done this one I'm definitely not going to bother with the second part.
No.15295
>>15294That's roughly the majority consensus. It had all the vibes of a series that would've been popular in the west a while back but the actual execution just wasn't there.
No.15298
>>15296It was a pretty bizarre jump for the story to take. This season covered so much of Bon's life, covering so many events, and then when they get back to the present suddenly a huge amount of time has passed and we've missed Yotaro's entire development from some punk into becoming a shin'uchi. It seems like the second part is going to have a pretty different sort of focus, so I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy it compared to this one.
As for an ending to this part, it was rather abrupt too, going right from Bon adopting the girl and them moving into a new home together to the present.
Of course, I'm not familiar with the source material, so I can't say if this is how it was originally, but it feels like it became quite rushed all of a sudden.
No.15331
>>15296>>15298The anime adapted 5 volumes of the manga, and while I haven't read it at all, I'm pretty sure that those volumes were mostly dedicated to telling Bon's background. I would expect the next season to adapt the final 5 volumes (the manga's final chapter runs in June), which would tell the "Shouwa Genroku" part of the story (the term "shouwa genroku" refers specifically to the 1960s and early 1970s).
As for the missing information concerning Yotaro and Konatsu, I would say that either the beginning of s2 will backtrack and cover it, or it was just not very eventful. DEEN has definitely been cutting some corners, but with this it seems they've been cautious to avoid omitting important parts of the story.
I think pretty much every aspect of the first season was unexpectedly fantastic, with the storytelling, impressive attention to detail, characters, music (especially that OP), all that.
No.15332
>>15331(continued)
Its main shortcoming was the quick pacing, and seeing as DEEN hasn't had the best reputation, I doubt that they would have been able to get enough episodes to adapt it fully. However, they did a really good job covering for that, and, for the most part, avoided allowing it to come across as rushed (besides the pilot episode, which was certainly very rushed).
Now for some conjecture. I think that while Yotaro seemed to be the main character at the beginning, Bon is going to be the real main character until the end. Based on what happened at the tomb, he is still struggling internally with the events that happened years prior. With this combined with him now being the oldest in the Association, Yotaro's desire to take the Sukeroku name, and Konatsu's desire to continue the Sukeroku bloodline, Bon is really going to be at the center of all of it and I wouldn't be surprised if the story as a whole ends with him.
No.15359
>Yotaro's desire to take the Sukeroku name
When I think about it, this was also kind of odd, given how in the first episode Yotaro was so focused on Sukeroku that Bon became frustrated with him and they had the whole discussion about Yotaro needing to find his own rakugo, rather than simply trying to be Sukeroku. Without the development in between then and now it just feels like Yotaro didn't understand that at all.
No.15360
>>15359If you are trying to be extremely original you will just end up being retarded. It was very obvious that Sukeroku's style was close to Yotaro's, so much so, Bon was seeing Sukeroku in him and the possibility of doing together what he failed to do with Sukeroku years ago. But on the other hand he probably didn't expect to be that overshadowed, yet again, by his old friend. Bon has always felt as living in his shadow.
No.15413
>>15410I was a little let down by the ending, I really thought they'd actually killed off those two girls and the other pilot and with Orga being told he was right to send all those children off to die. I really would have liked to see them punished for it.
I felt really bad for Gaelio though, Fareed is one cold motherfucker. He doesn't deserve that loli at all.
No.15414
>>15413Oh yeah, I was sure that the white-haired girl had died, at least. I figured the guy would survive, but with injuries. That's the one thing I'm not satisfied with because of the lack of consequences; while nowhere near as bad it was reminiscent of Aldnoah with its characters seemingly dying regularly only to come back later.
Mika got pretty fucked though. Between him and Orga I'm sure only one will survive to the end of S2.

It was really great, and Kobayashi's acting as the kid Konatsu will warm me in the cold winter days for sure. If I have to complain, it'd be only about the death scene. Maybe if it was given a more thorough treatment, it wouldn't feel ridiculous, but… like this? A bit too many dramatic moments happened, and I stopped taking them seriously midway through. That being said, pretty much everything else was quality execution from the whole team. I even liked the first episode, and don't think it was too rushed. I should watch it again now.
